The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro in 1967 was basically a knee-jerk reaction to the introduction of the Ford Mustang three years earlier. Mustang performed beyond anybody’s wildest dreams, and GM wanted a piece of that action. It was widely acknowledged that Chevrolet didn’t get it right, and no sooner had the car been launched than the company started work on the new generation.
Introduced in 1970, the second-generation Camaro proved worth the wait. It lasted through 1981 and lived through one of the more tumultuous years in the auto industry, during which muscle cars were killed off.
The fact it not only survived but was able to give other muscle cars such as the Ford Mustang a run for its money is a testament to the car’s desirability. There were a lot of Camaros built over that decade-plus, but the 1970s also unveiled some rare offerings of the Chevrolet pony car, and one in particular that remains historically significant.
